European Marine Board and EuroGOOS are working together to promote and facilitate the establishment of EOOS, the European Ocean Observing System.

European Marine Board and EuroGOOS are working together to promote and facilitate the establishment of EOOS, the European Ocean Observing System. With the advice from the EOOS Steering Group, we’ve analysed the results of the public stakeholder consultation on EOOS (you will receive a copy of the summary of the consultation results with the plenary meeting documents for Tenerife). The vast majority of the respondents endorsed the EOOS concept and many respondents highlighted the critical importance of ensuring buy-in and involvement in the EOOS process from national ministries and funding agencies.

As a first step, it was agreed to build a database of relevant national key contacts on ocean observation and marine monitoring in Europe. A request was sent (see below) to the JPI Oceans Management Board (representing most of the European countries with coast line), who had agreed to help the EOOS process at its last meeting on 29 March. EMB and EuroGOOS have decided to send the same request to their respective boards.

The secretariat kindly ask to further disseminate the message below and also welcomes any suggestions for EOOS key contacts to be sent to the e-mail address amuniz@marineboard.eu.. At this stage, we are open for any suggestion, so there is no maximum of contacts per country.

Towards a European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) :

Building a database of EOOS key contacts for ocean observation and marine monitoring

The EOOS initiative is working to develop an overarching framework to integrate and sustain Europe’s capabilities in ocean observation. Until now, the EOOS process has been managed and monitored by a Steering Group, co-Chaired by the European Marine Board and EuroGOOS and made up of ocean observing experts and representatives of the European Commission. For EOOS to succeed, it will be essential to have a strong engagement and support from key agencies at national level.

For this reason, the EOOS Steering Group is opening a call for key contacts who hold national or sub-national responsibility for ocean observation and marine monitoring.

Aim : The purpose of this call is to produce a database of EOOS key contacts. In the first instance, this will be used for sharing updates on EOOS but will continue to be developed over time.

Profile : Key contacts may include persons from funding agencies or public authorities that manage the funding and/or implementation of national or sub-national programmes in marine monitoring or ocean observation. Such persons may also coordinate scientific capabilities in ocean observation at a national level and/or represent their country on national/regional or European programme committees for ocean observation and wider marine research infrastructures.

How to contribute : Please propose names of key contacts in the attached form (.xls) and return to info@eoos.eu by 5 May 2017. Please note this is not a formal nomination process and all proposals are welcome. To maximize input from the community, this call will also be sent to EMB and EuroGOOS membership organizations (apologies in advance for any cross posting).
