The research will focus on the ability of variational data assimilation techniques to improve the quality of regional shelf sea models. Emphasis will be on assimilating temperature and salinity profiles along with sea surface height which has proven scientifically challenging in the shelf environment.
The PhD will work within the Plymouth Ocean Forecasting Centre in the School of Marine Science and Engineering, the study will be linked to the on-going research projects and be built on the success of our participation in EU MyOcean (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyOcean) and PERSEUS (http://www.perseus-net.eu) multidisciplinary research. The student will participate in the regular PhD training programme offered by the School of Marine Science and Engineering and the Postgraduate School, University of Plymouth.
