he Norwegian Polar Institute carries out scientific research, mapping and environmental monitoring in the Arctic and the Antarctic. Southern Ocean Biological Oceanographer

The Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a permanent research scientist position as a Southern Ocean Biological Oceanographer. The work will be conducted in the institute’s Research Department, Section for Oceans and Sea Ice.

Work Content

The research scientist will be responsible for oceanographic modelling and field studies related to key regions of importance for primary and secondary production in the Southern Ocean. Physical and chemical factors influencing the regulation of phytoplankton biomass and production and the relationships between phytoplankton and water column optical properties, as well as the linkage through top predator habitats are key areas of interest. Focus on the properties and dynamics of Polar Fronts, the marginal sea ice zone and seasonal freshwater changes are all candidate areas of study. Physical factors driving the spatiotemporal distribution of Antarctic krill and other species that are important components of the Southern Ocean ecosystem will also be of key importance.
