Offre de poste : Call for Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Limnology & Oceanography (L&O)

Version imprimable de cet article

The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) invites applications for the new position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Deputy EiC) for its flagship journal, Limnology & Oceanography. The selected candidate will be an accomplished aquatic scientist with a broad understanding of our discipline and substantive technical competence and editorial experience. The selected candidate will begin working under the guidance of L&O Editor-in-Chief (EIC), Bob Howarth, on July 1, 2017.

L&O was founded in 1956 with a unifying emphasis on the understanding of aquatic ecosystems and is among the most frequently cited journals in the aquatic sciences. The journal currently receives over 500 submissions each year and publishes six regular issues and one special issue, with a total of approximately 2300 pages each year. The special issues focus on topics that are timely and of interest to a significant number of ASLO members. In addition, L&O has started to publish virtual issues — online- only collections of previously published content organized by theme or topic — starting last fall with one that celebrates the first 60 years of the journal.

The Deputy EiC will be responsible for handling special and virtual issues from conception through completion, in close consultation and coordination with the EIC, working with guest special editors and publishing staff. Further, the Deputy EiC will assist the EIC with review, analysis, and synthesis of data on journal performance, publishing trends in the field, and preparation of reports for the ASLO Board, the Publications Committee, the L&O Associate Editors, and the ASLO membership. In addition, the Deputy EiC will serve as appointed EIC during any vacation or extended travel by the EIC. The Deputy EiC will assist the EIC in other duties of journal management as required.

Applicants must be dynamic, internationally recognized scientific leaders, and have a strong record of scholarly publication and editorial involvement, preferably as an associate editor, deputy, or senior editor of a major journal. The Deputy EiC should be highly organized, able to function with minimal oversight, and adept at analyzing publishing data and trends. Extensive experience in using the ScholarOne web-based submission system, as well as familiarity with emerging publishing trends (e.g., data repositories), is desirable. A broad knowledge of ASLO’s journals and their competitors is essential.

The Deputy EiC serves a three-year term, potentially renewable upon evaluation by the ASLO Publications Committee and agreement of the ASLO Board of Directors. The Deputy is responsible for assisting the L&O EIC in reporting journal outcomes to the ASLO Board throughout the year, typically in conjunction with scheduled ASLO scientific meetings, and for attending ASLO and OSM meetings, as well as the annual ASLO Editor’s Strategy Meeting with ASLO’s publishing partner, Wiley. This is a part-time contractual position and an honorarium will be provided, consistent with the effort required. Travel expenses to aforementioned meetings are provided.

All applications must include a letter of interest, a vision statement outlining their approach to the aforementioned duties (maximum two pages double-spaced), a CV, and names and contact information of three individuals who can evaluate their qualifications for this position.

Deadline for applications is May 1, 2017. All applications will be reviewed by the ASLO Publications Committee. Virtual interviews of selected candidates will be conducted by video teleconference no later than May 31, 2017. Nominations and applications for the position should be submitted via e-mail to Sue Rulla at suer@sgmeet.com

Any questions or suggestions for nominees should be directed to Publications Committee Interim Chair, Dr. James J. Elser at past-president@aslo.org
