Postdoctoral Position(s) in Microbial Oceanography at UCSB

Version imprimable de cet article

The Marine Science Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks highly motivated and qualified individuals to join a field based research programs to examine microbial interactions with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the oceanic water column. The complex foodweb processes that produce and consume dissolved organic matter (DOM) can result in long-term storage of organic matter, or efficient recycling, depending on the chemistry of the DOM molecules, their physical location in the oceans, and the capacity of the microbial community to harvest them as resources. The position(s) will involve microbial and biogeochemical field measurements and associated sample and data analysis. Candidates with established records in microbial ecology, molecular microbiology and / or marine chemistry will be considered. The PhD level postdoctoral fellow(s) will contribute to recently funded, multi institutional programs in microbial oceanography based in the Sargasso Sea and Santa Barbara Channel.

Candidates with a microbial ecology perspective should have training in molecular biology with strong skills in bioinformatics. Candidates with a marine chemistry perspective should have background in ocean DOM biogeochemistry and molecular characterization of organic matter. The candidate will be expected to lead a portion of sea going oceanographic field expeditions as well as laboratory based studies.

Minimum requirements
: A PhD (degree preferably within the past three years) in microbial oceanography, marine microbial ecology, chemical oceanography or equivalent is required at the time of the appointment.

Additional requirements : Candidate must be able to participate on sea going research cruises (1 - 30 days) and stand watch at sea. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven capacity to publish in peer-reviewed journals and excellent letters or recommendation are requirements.

Desirable requirements include experience with interdisciplinary research involving microbial and chemical oceanography with training in the following areas 1) genomic, transcriptomics or proteomic approaches to assessing microbial community structure and function, 2) DOM biogeochemistry and chemical characterization of organic matter in ocean system. Some mix of computational analyses, statistical analysis and programing skill is desired.

Salary and benefits will depend on academic background and experience. 100% time appointment for one year from start date with anticipated funding for two or more years, conditional upon performance. UCSB offers competitive salary and benefits packages.

Electronic applications including a full CV, description of research interests (up to two pages) and names and addresses of three references should be sent to :

Screening of applications will begin March 15, 2016. Start date is negotiable, but is anticipated to be no later than July 2016.
