The aim of my research work concerns the carbon and nitrogen cycles in marine environment and especially in, the upper layer of the ocean, so-called euphotic layer. I want quantify the carbon and nitrogen fluxes between the dissolved compartment (inorganic and organic) and primary producers (phytoplankton) and bacteria. My first researches were on the nutrients and chlorophyll distribution in various oceanic regions: Mediterranean Sea, tropical Atlantic, Equatorial Pacific, Red Sea, Arctic Ocean. The influence of hydrodynamical processes (upwelling, front, eddies) on the nutrient inputs and on the phytoplankton distribution have been described. I have improved some chemical procedures 1) to detect traces of nitrate in oligotrophic waters and 2) to measure simultaneously the level of dissolved and particulate forms of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Some isotopic procedures (15N-13C) have been improved to bettsr quantify the planktonic production, the nitrogen regeneration and the excretion of dissolved organic matter. The techniques are applied during oceanographic cruises to participate to the actual debate concerning the rule of the ocean in the long term trap of carbonic gas issued from the human activity. Present works are focused on coupled studies of biogeochemical processes which control pools of major nutrients and regulate the export of organic matter towards the deep ocean.
