I was a PhD student in oceanography and biogeochemistry at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography from October 2011 to December 2014. My phD subject was focused on the KEOPS 2 program (Kerguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study) that aimed to better understand the impact of natural iron fertilization on the ecosystem functioning and the associated biogeochemical cycles by targeting the Kerguelen region. As part of this general aim, I have been interested in addressing:
(1) The impact of iron on the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, silicon, nitrogen and phosphorus
(2) The impact of iron on the nutritional dynamics of phytoplankton and the phytoplankton community structure
(3) The link between biogeochemical cycles and phytoplankton community composition
To this end, I used two different approaches during my thesis. First, a classical biogeochemical approach in describing the distribution of particulate matter and its dynamics in terms of Si fluxes (using stable isotope enrichment experiments 30Si). The second approach, constituting the originality of my research, consisted in reaching cellular and specific levels by assessing specific carbon biomass from biovolume (counts by microscopy) and identifying key species that were actively silicifying (using the innovative PDMPO staining method). This study provided new information on Si uptake at the cellular and specific level, bringing unprecedented description of the Si cycle linked to community structure and to Si specific uptake. Observations suggested that physiological traits of diatoms directly drove matter export to depth in the Kerguelen region, highlighting the importance of studying the specific composition of diatom assemblages to better understand their impact on the biogeochemical cycles.
